Why “Just One More Spin” Can Become So Powerful

It has been a while since I wrote something for this website.
Life has been busy. There are always things that need to be done, people who need attention, work that needs to be finished, and responsibilities waiting for tomorrow. Sometimes, when life gets crowded, writing gets pushed to the side.
But one thing that has remained remarkably strong is gambling.
And lately, I have been thinking about it differently.
Not just about winning or losing. Not just about how much money goes into a machine and how much comes out.
I’ve been thinking about what happens inside our brains while we play.
Why can a person sit in front of a slot machine and know, logically, that they should stop—but still feel an almost irresistible desire to continue?
Why can someone say, “I can’t afford to lose this,” and then make another bet?
Why does a small win sometimes make us want another win instead of making us walk away?
And why can a person who is perfectly capable of making good decisions in everyday life suddenly make decisions while gambling that seem completely out of character?
The more I have learned about the brain, the more I understand that gambling isn’t simply a matter of willpower.
There is a biological system working in the background.
And slot machines are exceptionally good at engaging it.
The Brain Doesn’t Only Respond to Winning
When we talk about gambling and the brain, the first chemical most people mention is dopamine.
But dopamine is often misunderstood.
It isn’t simply a chemical that says, “This feels good.”
Dopamine is deeply involved in motivation, learning, anticipation, attention, and the process by which the brain learns what might be worth pursuing.
That distinction matters.
Imagine that you put $20 into a slot machine and immediately received $20 back every time.
That would probably become boring very quickly.
The interesting part is the uncertainty.
Maybe the next spin wins.
Maybe it doesn’t.
Maybe you get a small win.
Maybe something exciting happens.
Maybe you see two matching symbols and the third one stops just above the payline.
The brain is constantly asking:
“What is going to happen next?”
That uncertainty is powerful.
Research into gambling disorder has found changes in reward-related brain circuitry, including the ventral striatum and medial prefrontal cortex. Neurotransmitter studies have also found evidence of amplified dopamine release in people with gambling disorder. [1]
That doesn’t mean every person who plays a slot machine has an addicted brain.
It means gambling can engage neural systems that are involved in reward and learning—and, in some people, those systems can become part of a destructive cycle.
The Most Dangerous Word in Gambling: “Maybe”
Think about how many gambling decisions are built around one word:
Maybe.
Maybe the next spin will win.
Maybe the machine is getting hot.
Maybe the bonus will come.
Maybe I can get my money back.
Maybe the next $20 will turn into $100.
Maybe I should play another ten minutes.
Maybe I can recover what I lost.
The brain is very sensitive to uncertain rewards.
A predictable reward eventually becomes ordinary.
An uncertain reward keeps our attention.
That is one reason gambling can become so absorbing.
The question isn’t simply:
“Did I win?”
The brain is also responding to:
“Could I win?”
And sometimes the anticipation becomes almost as important as the outcome.
Why a Near-Miss Feels Like Something
Here is one of the strangest things about slot machines.
You can lose—and still feel as though something almost happened.
Two symbols line up.
The third stops just above or below the winning position.
You didn’t win.
Objectively, it is a loss.
But emotionally, it may not feel like an ordinary loss.
Researchers call this a near-miss.
A 2009 study published in Neuron found that near-misses increased people’s desire to continue gambling and recruited brain circuitry associated with winning, even though the outcome produced no monetary reward. [2]
That is fascinating.
The brain can respond to a losing event as though something important almost happened.
And this is where a dangerous thought can appear:
“I was so close.”
But “close” doesn’t mean “next.”
The machine isn’t telling you that your next spin is more likely to win.
The previous result doesn’t make the next result due.
Yet emotionally, the near-miss can make us feel as though we are getting closer.
“I Was So Close” Can Keep You Playing
A more recent series of experiments involving online slot-machine simulations found that near-misses increased people’s motivation to continue gambling. Participants also started the next spin faster after a near-miss and, in one study, increased their bet size following a near-miss. [3]
Think about how powerful that combination can be:
Near miss → excitement → faster play → bigger bet → another spin.
The player doesn’t necessarily sit down and consciously decide:
“I am going to increase my gambling because my brain has interpreted the near-miss as a motivational signal.”
It happens much more automatically.
That’s why understanding the brain matters.
Once you recognize the mechanism, you can begin to recognize the thought before acting on it.
The Slot Machine Can Turn a Loss Into a Celebration
There is another feature of modern electronic gaming machines that researchers have studied: losses disguised as wins.
Imagine betting $5 and receiving $2 back.
You have actually lost $3.
But the machine may play celebratory sounds, flash lights, and display the $2 as a “win.”
Financially:
-$3
Emotionally:
WIN!
That’s a very different message.
A systematic review of 51 experimental studies found that losses disguised as wins can lead players to overestimate how much they are actually winning, while the sounds and visual effects associated with wins can make these outcomes exciting. [4]
This is important because gambling isn’t only about mathematics.
It is also about how the outcome is presented to the brain.
The machine doesn’t need to lie about the money.
It only needs to make the experience of losing feel less like losing.
The Brain Can Learn the Gambling Environment
Something else happens over time.
The brain learns.
If you repeatedly gamble in the same place, at the same time, with the same sounds, music, screen, lighting, or even the same chair, those things can eventually become associated with gambling.
A person may feel an urge before even placing a bet.
The casino environment itself can become a trigger.
The sound of coins.
The music.
The spinning reels.
The bonus animation.
The notification from an online casino.
The sight of a familiar game.
Even remembering a previous big win can become a trigger.
This is classical learning at work: the brain begins connecting environmental cues with the possibility of reward.
That’s why sometimes the urge appears before we have even consciously decided to gamble.
Why Winning Can Be Dangerous Too
We usually think losing is the dangerous part.
But winning can also create problems.
Imagine starting with $100.
You win $200.
Now you have $300.
You feel excited.
Your brain has just received evidence that gambling can produce a reward.
You might think:
“I’m good at this.”
Then:
“Maybe I can make another $200.”
Then:
“I’ll just play a little longer.”
And suddenly the goal has changed.
You were originally gambling for entertainment.
Now you are gambling because you believe you can make more.
Eventually, the $300 becomes $250.
Then $200.
Then $150.
And now something else happens.
You want to get back to $300.
This is where loss chasing can begin.
The Dangerous Transition: From Winning to Chasing
One of the most important things I have learned personally is that the problem isn’t always getting the win.
Sometimes the problem is what happens after the win.
You withdraw some money.
You leave some money in the account.
You tell yourself:
“I’ll play with what’s left.”
Then the balance drops.
Suddenly, you don’t want to leave with a smaller amount.
You want to recover the high point.
The brain has created a reference point.
If you had $500 and now have $300, the brain may experience that $200 difference almost like a loss—even though you’re still technically $200 ahead of where you started.
That’s how quickly gambling can change the meaning of money.
You stop asking:
“Am I ahead?”
and start asking:
“How do I get back to where I was?”
That is a dangerous question.
Why We Can Know Better and Still Do It
This is perhaps the question I have struggled with the most.
How can I know what is happening and still feel the urge?
Because knowing something intellectually and feeling something emotionally are not the same process.
The brain contains systems involved in reward, motivation, emotion, learning, and long-term decision-making.
When the gambling urge becomes strong, immediate reward can become much more important than a future consequence.
Tomorrow’s rent doesn’t feel as emotionally powerful as the possibility of winning $500 right now.
A future financial goal doesn’t create the same immediate excitement as a spinning reel.
This is one reason gambling can produce decisions that seem irrational afterward.
The person wasn’t necessarily unaware of the consequences.
The immediate reward simply became disproportionately important.
Research on gambling disorder consistently points to differences in reward processing, decision-making, and executive-control systems. [1][5]
Why Playing for Hours Changes the Game
There is another lesson that has become very clear to me:
Time matters.
When I am fresh, I can think.
When I am tired, I negotiate.
That difference is enormous.
After hours of repetitive gambling, the brain is exposed to hundreds or thousands of small decisions:
Bet?
Stop?
Increase?
Decrease?
Continue?
Withdraw?
Try another game?
Recover the loss?
Maybe the next spin?
At some point, mental fatigue enters the picture.
The decision that seemed obvious earlier becomes negotiable.
And that’s when a person can say:
“I’ll just play another 20 minutes.”
Twenty minutes becomes an hour.
An hour becomes several hours.
The Responsible Gambling Council describes a phenomenon sometimes called being “in the zone,” where a person becomes highly absorbed or disconnected from the outside world; slot machines can be particularly conducive to this state. [6]
When you’re in that state, the world outside the machine can temporarily become less important.
Bills can wait.
Sleep can wait.
Work can wait.
Responsibilities can wait.
The next spin cannot.
That is when gambling stops being entertainment and starts consuming attention.
The Illusion That the Machine Is “Hot”
There is another thought many gamblers experience:
“This machine is hot.”
I understand why this feeling is powerful.
Maybe you’ve been watching the machine.
Maybe you’ve seen several small wins.
Maybe the bonuses are appearing.
Maybe you have been playing for a while and suddenly the game seems to be paying.
It feels like you have discovered something.
But a random-number-generated gambling machine is not keeping a simple memory of your previous spins in the way our intuition imagines.
Each machine operates through its random-number generator, and previous outcomes don’t mean that the next spin is “due.” [6]
This doesn’t mean the experience of a “hot machine” isn’t psychologically real.
It means the feeling of a pattern and an actual predictive advantage are two different things.
And that distinction is important if we want to gamble more mindfully.
The Brain Doesn’t Know the Difference Between $1 and $1,000
There is something else we sometimes forget.
The brain doesn’t experience money exactly the way a spreadsheet does.
A $100 win can feel enormous when we are excited.
A $100 loss can feel unbearable.
But when we are gambling for hours, money can gradually become numbers on a screen.
$1,000.
$800.
$500.
$300.
$150.
The numbers change.
The emotional meaning changes with them.
This is why taking physical or psychological distance from the gambling account can be powerful.
When money is sitting in a gambling account, it can feel like gambling money.
When it is withdrawn and separated from the gambling environment, it becomes much easier to see it as real money again.
So Is Dopamine the Villain?
No.
This is important.
Dopamine isn’t evil.
Dopamine helps us learn.
It helps motivate us.
It helps us pay attention to things that might matter.
It helps us pursue food, relationships, goals, achievement, and many other rewards.
The problem is not dopamine itself.
The problem is when a highly stimulating behavior repeatedly captures the brain’s motivational and learning systems.
And gambling is particularly effective because the reward is uncertain.
You don’t know when the next reward will come.
That uncertainty keeps the brain engaged.
So instead of saying:
“Dopamine controls me.”
I prefer:
“My brain learned to strongly anticipate this reward.”
That gives us something we can work with.
Understanding the Brain Gives Us Another Choice
Once you understand what is happening, you can begin building rules around the brain instead of fighting it.
For example:
1. Don’t rely entirely on willpower.
Make important decisions before you start.
2. Don’t chase losses.
A loss is a loss.
Trying to recover it immediately can turn one bad decision into many.
3. Don’t interpret a near-miss as a signal.
Almost winning is still losing.
4. Don’t let a win become permission to gamble indefinitely.
A win is not a reason to continue forever.
5. Watch the clock.
If fatigue changes your decision-making, time becomes a gambling limit.
6. Protect money after withdrawing it.
Once money has been withdrawn, mentally move it out of the gambling world.
7. Pay attention to your thoughts.
The most dangerous thoughts may sound harmless:
“Just one more.”
“I’m almost there.”
“The game is hot.”
“I’ll get it back.”
“I’m still ahead.”
“I have plenty of time.”
Those thoughts are worth noticing.
Not because every thought is wrong.
But because the thought itself can be part of the gambling loop.
My Sunday Thought
This brings me back to why I am writing today.
Life is busy.
There are days when I don’t have enough time for everything I want to do.
There are responsibilities at home.
There is work.
There are people I care about.
There are financial decisions and plans for the future.
And somewhere in all of that, gambling can still occupy a surprisingly large amount of mental space.
But recently, I have been trying to approach gambling with a clearer mind.
Not just:
“Can I win?”
But:
“What is my brain doing right now?”
That is a very different question.
When I feel excited after a win, I can ask:
“Is this excitement making me want to continue?”
When I experience a near-miss:
“Why does that feel like I was close?”
When I lose:
“Am I trying to enjoy a game, or am I trying to recover money?”
When I am tired:
“Would I make the same decision if I were rested?”
These questions create a little space between the urge and the action.
And sometimes that little space is enough.
Gratitude
I also want to take a moment to say something personal.
I am grateful.
I am grateful for the people who have helped me, encouraged me, listened to me, and given me perspective when I needed it.
Sometimes we imagine that changing a behavior requires one dramatic moment.
I don’t think that’s always true.
Sometimes change happens through small realizations.
One conversation.
One honest admission.
One night when you finally stop.
One morning when you wake up and realize you protected what you had.
One moment when you recognize the thought before acting on it.
Those moments matter.
And I am grateful for the help I have received along the way.
The Goal Isn’t to Outsmart the Slot Machine
I used to think the challenge was figuring out how to win.
When to play.
How much to bet.
Whether a game was “hot.”
Whether a certain pattern meant something.
But the deeper I look into gambling psychology, the more I realize that the biggest challenge isn’t outsmarting the machine.
It is understanding myself.
The machine doesn’t need to convince me that I will definitely win.
It only needs to keep me interested in what might happen next.
And my brain is remarkably good at generating reasons to find out.
So perhaps mindful gambling isn’t about becoming an expert at winning.
Perhaps it is about becoming an expert at recognizing the moment when the game starts making decisions for you.
The Most Important Spin Is the One You Don’t Make
There is a point in every gambling session when the next spin becomes a choice.
You can make it.
Or you can walk away.
The machine doesn’t care which one you choose.
But your future might.
The money you keep can pay a bill.
It can go toward a vacation.
It can sit in savings.
It can buy something meaningful.
It can simply give you peace of mind.
And sometimes the biggest win isn’t the jackpot.
It is walking away with what you already have.
So my Sunday thought is simple:
Understand your brain.
Respect the power of the game.
Don’t confuse anticipation with opportunity.
Don’t confuse a near-miss with being close.
Don’t confuse a win with permission to keep going forever.
And above all:
You don’t have to win the next spin.
You have to make a decision your future self will thank you for.
That is what mindful gambling means to me.
Not pretending gambling has no risks.
Not pretending I have everything figured out.
Not promising that every session will end perfectly.
It means becoming more aware of what is happening inside my own mind—and using that awareness to make better decisions.
Life is busy.
The games will still be there.
